Double Gold in the "Great One's" House
Shortly after our sister team the Bantam B's captured the gold in exciting overtime fashion the Pee Wee BB's did the same Sunday in the home town of the great #99. As expected it was a heck of a weekend of hockey with some of the toughest teams around.
Friday was against the Hamilton Hawks, a top LLFHL team who is currently in their loop finals. No scoring in the first or second shows how tight this one was. In the third Rachel Patterson took matters into her own hands and bugled the twine on a back end rush, unassisted. Meg Gunn scored the GWG minutes later in a strangely similar fashion but with Patterson sending her in. Hawks added a single late making the finally-1 Stangs.

Saturday had the ladies play two. In the morning match they squared of against the always challenging desert birds from Cambridge. No names made the score sheet in this stalemate as the familiar foes skated to a 0-0 tie. Wilson and her counterpart staying flawless throughout the three frames. The afternoon tilt was a bit more exciting as the Mustangs hosted the Gloucester-Cumberland Stars, one of the top teams in the Ottawa region. Another draw in this one as both teams played a high pace, physical, and entertaining hockey. Kate Mabey notched her first in the first from Goodwin and Nat Beilhartz slipped one home late in the third from Goodfellow on a tough drive to the net. With one win and two ties the BB's place second in pool play and drew those Roadrunners for the Sunday am semi.

The rematch on the Sabbath was sure to be a great battle and it didn't disappoint. Cambridge opened the scoring in the middle stanza and put the pressure on. Not to be denied it was Mabey again to the rescue as she took a LeCourtois pass to the point and slinged it top shelf. The GWG in this one was an all to familiar, but welcoming site, as Rachel Patterson weaved in and buried it high glove side, unassisted. Onto the gold medal game with a 2-1 W.

The championship game was 1 vs 2 as the G.C. Stars made it through to answer the question - who would prevail? One of the most entertaining games to date followed as again both benches brought their "A" game. The always hard working Meg Gunn slapped the opener in off a goal mouth scramble but G.C. answered a short time later in period one. G.C. saw the Mustangs single and raised to a pair off a strong drive to the net 2-1 G.C. Mabey answered the bell yet again from her perch at the point and the GWG came from the twig of her partner Madison Bender before the second period ended, both unassisted.  The insurance marker was a carbon copy of a few this weekend as Mabey made good again in the third from Gunn and Beilhartz. Final 4-2 Mustangs! What an outstanding weekend of hockey and a great warm up for the LLFHL series finally, which starts Wednesday. Be proud ladies, you continue to answer the call and always DO YOUR BEST!
