What a Finish, What a Series!
All the clichés in this epic battle. An incredibly hard fought series with the closest of margins the difference. The West Huron Wave proved to be one of the toughest opponents of the play offs to date, congrats to their enter group for a job well done. Saturday the Mustangs hit the road and made the long trek the Clinton to play in the impressive Central Huron Community Center. No scoring to report in this one as both teams slugged it out to a 0-0 stalemate. Chances were traded but neither side would yield.

This of course set the stage for the game three, winner takes all finally. As anticipated it was a tough grind but as period 1 wound down there was a break in the stand off. Frances Wolkensperg chipped the puck by the last defender while on the PK, managed to catch the puck, and roofed one of the prettiest markers of the season. 1-0 Stangs. That seemed to get the Wave rolling as less than a minutes later they ripped one home making the score at the end of the first 1-1.

Period two was yet another scoreless frame but period three was a hum dinger. West Huron capitalized first early on as a rebound landed on a Wave forward's stick and she did not miss. 2-1 West Huron. Now it was gut check time. Sport does not build character but it reveals it and these ladies did not quit. With 3:33 on the clock again it was Wolkensperg who somehow put her shaft on a Mabey point shot and deflected the biscuit up, not down, off the cross bar and in. 2-2. As the clock ticked down, overtime was an obvious given for this series.

Overtime was a 10min sudden death 4 on 4 stand off. Lady luck finally decided to pay the Mustangs a visit as a tripping call went against West Huron. With the man advantage Rachel Patterson had seen enough as she skated the puck into the offensive zone and attempted to rip one home. Fortunately she heeled the puck and the off speed swipe fooled the Wave keeper who stayed up just long enough to have the shot slip under her stick and into the back of the cage. Patterson with the OT winner makes the final 3-2 Mustangs. This cardiac clincher takes the girls to the LLFHL final four March 27-29th and gives them the chance to achieve the final goal of the 2014/2015 season. Two more championship tournaments to go. You got to be in it to win it and the ladies have done that. Well done.
