A Bronze Medal Performance at LLFHL Championships!
After a very competitive championship weekend in Missassauga the Novice B Mustangs captured the Bronze medal capping off an outstanding LLFHL season. By capturing the West division championship last week the Mustangs earned the right to compete against the three other divisional champs to see who is "the best of the best". Game one pitted the Stangs against the Peterborough Ice Kats. Period one saw the Kats come out flying as their key player netted the opening goal with a tough wrist shot. Period two belonged to the home side as Erin Pettifer knocked in a one-timer from a Kendra Harkins pass and Lynsey Goodwin flipped the puck up and over a sprawled out Peterborough goalie. With the assist going to Carson Lean, game one finished 2-1 for the Mustangs.

Game two was a "heartbreaker" as the Novice B group faced the Barrie Sharks. It was the Mustangs who made the score sheet first in this tilt as Carson Lean scored on the power play from Lynsey Goodwin and Leah LeCourtois on the back end. The hockey Gods turned on the Mustangs for a brief period as Barrie was awarded two controversial goals, one in period two and one late in the third, both off confusing plays and unclear whistles. Time ran out and Barrie got the 1-2 win which finished day one for the Stangs giving them one win and one loss. Day two started early for the Mustangs as they faced the eventual gold medalist, the Ancaster Avalanche. Period one was arguably one of the best periods of hockey the girls have played all season as they held the Avalanche off the score sheet and controlled the play very well. The Novice B group could not contain the talented Ancaster forwards indefinitely and in period two they found the back of the net twice with very skilled, well placed and elevated shots. Period three was another solid effort from the girls but the stifling Ancaster defence held strong and remained scoreless. With one win and two losses the Mustangs were now eliminated from the gold medal match and placed in the battle for bronze. The team adapted the attitude "You can lose and get silver but you've got to win to get bronze" and set their sights on that goal as they again faced the Peterborough Ice Kats. In the battle for the bronze the Mustangs came out determined and opened scoring as Landyn Meadows slipped one in by the net minder in period one - assists to Erin Pettifer and Kendra Harkins. Not to be out done the top Ice Kat forward snaked through the home side and again bested Milne with a great shot. Not to be denied the Mustangs battled hard, contained the Ice Kats and finally in the third Meadows notched her second from Harkins and Pettifer. Sydney Healey took a quick break from her tight checking role and picked up a loose puck, zipped it by the Ice Kat keeper and capped off a solid 3-1 bronze medal victory.
