OWHA 2015 Provincial Championships
After going undefeated in Provincial Playdowns, the Bantam B Mustangs were set to gallop into Brampton and make a run at the title.

game #1

Right out of the gate the Mustangs had the pleasure of getting the defending champs in the first game as they played the Nepean Wildcats. It didn't take the Mustangs long to get on the board, four minutes into the first period Grace let a shot go from the blue line that found its way in the back of the net giving Grand River a 1-0 lead. As the game progressed it was easy to see why the Wildcats were the defending champs as they moved the puck extremely well. By the start of the second it was tied 1-1. Nepean put on the pressure, controlled the second and came out with a 2-1 lead. With the start of the third, the Mustangs started to push back but Nepean scored their third and final goal with three minutes left in the game to ice it and make the final score 3-1. Not the start the girls wanted but it was a good effort that could be built upon for the next game.

game #2

The second game of the day was against the Toronto Leaside Wildcats. With both teams suffering losses in their opening games, this was a win or go home scenario. After a scoreless first the Mustangs started to establish the forecheck and take over the game. Although dominating in shots, it was Toronto scoring on a one timer to go up 1-0 at the end of two periods. With the start of the third the welcome sight of the "Mustang Stampede" was in full effect. The girls were not going home early and their tenacity showed. Nineteen seconds into the period, Jess scored from in close with helpers from Frannie and Fries. Not willing to let up, the Mustangs pressed on and the game winner came with less then two minutes to go as Jess buried her second of the game giving the Mustangs the lead 2-1. Eighteen seconds later the Mustangs scored again to make the final 3-1. With a win and a loss on the books, the Mustangs would have to win every game for the rest of the year to continue playing.

game #3

The third game was against the Norfolk Hericannes, with both teams sitting tied for second in their pool. After a scoreless first period the shots were dead even at five a piece. Realizing the urgency of the game, the Stampede was on and the Mustangs outshot Norfolk 17-3 over the last two periods. Unfortunately there was no payoff for the hard work as the final score stayed 0-0, leaving the Mustangs on the outside looking in as the girls were eliminated due to tie breakers.

Although the Girls of Grand River only lost once in nine Provincial playoff games, it was not enough to move on. A rough way to end the year but it shouldn't shadow the success this team has had this year.
