Atom BB Take Silver in Niagara Falls Classic
On September 25, the Grand River Mustangs Atom BB team travelled to Niagara Falls for their first tournament of the season.

On September 25, the Grand River Mustangs Atom BB team travelled to Niagara Falls for their first tournament of the season.  The Mustangs found themselves against the Mississauga Chiefs in Game one.  The Mustangs came out strong and ready to play.  Morgan Robinson found the back of the net first assisted by Avery Diljee and Bella Kent.  With  four minutes left in the first period Mackenzie Martin gave the Stangs a two goal lead with an assist  by Jessica Couling.  The Chiefs did not back down and battled back in the third period with two goals of their own.  Just when it looked as if this game would end in a draw, Amanda Johnson took a hard pass in front from Diljee and managed to put one past  the Mississauga goalie with only eighteen seconds left in the game.  The Stangs were able to hold on and took game one of the tournament.

In their second game of the day the Mustangs played against the Wolves from Whitby.  The Wolves proved no match for the mighty Stangs as Grand River scored 5 unanswered goals to take game two.  Diljee and Martin each had a pair in the game while Johnston added her second of the tourney.  Kezia Skerrit earned her first shutout of the year and was a force to be reckoned with in between the pipes.

In Game three, the Mustangs faced off against a very strong St.Catherines team.  The Badgers were quick and the Stangs found themselves in an uphill battle all game.  The St. Catherines goalie made some brilliant saves and the girls suffered their first defeat of the tournament with a 4-0 loss.

Knowing they had to bring their A -Game if  they wanted a shot at a medal, the Mustangs came out guns blazing in game four against the Hamilton Hawks. Grand River scored five goals in the first period, one of which was a beauty shot in the top corner by Alwynn Mackie.Rounding out the first period scoring was Diljee (2), Johnson (1) and Martin (1).   Robinson scored two more goals to seal the deal and Grand River walked away with a convincing 7-1 victory.

The Mustangs found themselves in the tournament final in a rematch with the St. Catherines Jr. Badgers. The team was on their game from the first puck drop.  Excellent defence from Campbell Lean, Victoria Smith and Ella Zwep kept the Badgers out of our end.  Both teams were held scoreless until midway through the second period.  St. Catherines scored first but the Mustangs were quick to answer back with a great end to end rush from Amanda Johnson. With both teams battling hard, it was St. Catherines who scored late in the third period to go ahead 2-1.  Great hustle up front by Sidney Wright, Mielle McKnight, Revlyn McManus and Jadynn McCracken kept the offensive push going for the Stangs but when the buzzer sounded, the Grand River Mustangs fell a goal short and took home the silver medal.  It was a fantastic weekend and great first tournament for the team.  The coaches were very proud of the effort put forth by the girls and are looking forward to an amazing season of Mustang hockey.
