Meet Your Coach - Final Installment
It all really began in a small, southern town when the youngest of 13 Fogarty boys was spirited away on a riverboat, at the ripe age of 7. But still that’s getting ahead of ourselves…

Through his very early formative years, young Steve painfully realized that he could not match the musical prowess of his siblings, and could often be found in the basement, with bass drums tied to his legs while his brothers threw harmonicas at him as punishment for his lack of talent.  So, after a rough third year in kindergarten, Steve decided to build a raft and sail down the Mississippi to escape. Eventually he ended up working on a riverboat, polishing the boat’s red lights...but later graduated to working on a sea-going vessel.

After a year or so of working on Captain Hextall’s schooner “The Flyer”, he got left behind while on shore leave on Cape Breton Island. There, he was taken in by a kindly couple who just happened to have the same last name as he did. Perhaps they were distant cousins? The couple raised young Steve as their own and, since they preferred hockey to music, his talent for blocking thrown harmonicas with bass drums became instrumental in the extended family hockey games on the neighbourhood pond.

Later on, Steve’s adopted family moved to Southern Ontario, where Steve’s new love of hockey grew into a gift for stopping pucks hurled at his body...helping to form him into "Steve the Grey"...the determined and achy old man he is today.Yet, and still...the echoes of his childhood years live on, in his slightly down east twang, and a love for music that he yearns to be able to play...
