The Come Back Kids Clinch Provincial Berth!
Finding themselves all alone atop the district standings, the girls from Grand River had a chance to clinch a spot in the Provincial Tournament Monday night as they hosted the Orangeville Tigers.
Despite coming out and pushing the pace of the game, the Mustangs were unable to move the scoreboard in the first period. It would be the Tigers that would open the scoring midway through the second putting the Stangs down by 1. As it has been all post season, it would take a goal against to give Grand River the boost to turn up their game. Lauren Dixon would break down the right wing and tuck one top cheese to even the score 1-1. One minute later, Al Montgomery would bury a power-play marker to give the home team a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Orangeville wasn't reading to throw in the towel and tied up the score 2-2 with less then 8 minutes to play. Once again the goal against would spur the Stangs to get back on the attack and it would be Dix getting her second of the game to put Grand River back on top to stay. Line mate Jaime Glerum buried two additional insurance goals late in the third to push the score to 5-2, the eventual final.
The win would leave the Midget Mustangs with a 7-0 record and clinching a spot in the Provincial Tournament in April. With three games left to play, the girls have their eyes set on top spot in the district as well as a potential dye job at the hair salon.
