Third Years Push Stangs to Perfect Play-Down Record
Fresh off securing first place, the Grand River Midget Mustangs had one final play-down game to take care of as they hosted the Mt Forest Rams Sunday night.
It wasn't only the last play-down game, but it was also the last OWHA home playoff game for four Mustangs. Kait Hodgkiss, Bella Hadfield, Alexis Kent and Al Montgomery (picture) are all aging out this year as Mustangs. Prior to puck drop the four were celebrated for all they have done for Grand River in their minor hockey careers.
Al would open the scoring six minutes in to put the Stangs up early 1-0. Mt Forest will also be playing in the OWHA Championships and they were not going to roll over for the rival Mustangs. The Rams scored twice in three minutes to jump ahead 2-1 early in the second.
For those that have followed the Stangs playoff run, one thing that's hard to deny is the girls can score and score quickly. With a minute left in the second, Roon and Jaime would bury goals 18 seconds apart to put Grand River up 3-2 heading into the third.
Roon would score again in the third to bump the lead to 4-2. The Rams once again would come back with a goal of their own to cut the lead to 4-3 and the dramatic finish. With 22 seconds left on the clock and a Stangs player in the box, Mt Forest pulled their goalie to have the 6 on 4 advantage in the Stangs end. Fittingly it was the four third year players on the ice to shut down the attacking Rams. With 13 seconds left, Bell would bury the empty netter sealing the win and the perfect 10-0 record!
Grand River will join 23 other teams from across the province April 3-5 to determine the provincial champion.
Aside form the full slate of practices on the schedule, the only other thing left to do is book a hair appointment.
