The U18B Mustangs travelled to London this past weekend to take part in the 32 Annual London Devilettes tournament. This was the third tourney of the year for the girls and they were looking to add some more bling to their already gold & silver collection.
This tournament was a great opportunity to see where Grand River was in the conversation of top teams in the province. The Mustangs round robin pool of four comprised three #1 teams in their respective leagues.
The Stangs finished Friday's schedule with two convincing wins over Markham & Toronto and were riding a 14 game win streak coming into Saturday. Waiting for Grand River was the Lucan Irish, the #1 team in Ontario. The Mustangs opened the score midway through the second but two late goals in the final 2 minutes sealed the victory for the Irish. Regardless of the outcome, both teams qualified for the semi-finals.
Sunday morning Grand River once again had another big centre waiting for them in the Barrie Sharks. The Stangs got on the board early and added to their lead midway through the third, which would prove to be the game winner. The Mustangs punched their ticket to the finals and a rematch with Lucan.
The Mustangs came out firing and scored what appeared to be the opening goal in the first, but it was waved off by the stripes. Much to the displeasure of the large group of Mustang support on hand. Shortly after, the Irish scored one of their own and that would stand as the game winner. The girls battled until the end but Lucan buried an empty net goal with 20 seconds left to secure the 2-0 win.
Loss aside, the girls walked out with the silver and heads high knowing they are right there in the discussion of top teams in Ontario. Great weekend of hockey!
