Mustangs U7 Hockey Program
The Mustangs U7 Program is designed to introduce young players to hockey in a fun, safe, and positive environment. This program focuses on learning the basics, building confidence, and developing a love for the game — all while keeping things age-appropriate and enjoyable.
At the U7 level, the emphasis is on:
-
Fun and participation
-
Fundamental skating and puck skills
-
Teamwork and sportsmanship
-
Building confidence on and off the ice
Many players in U7 are stepping onto the ice for the very first time, and that’s exactly who this program is built for.
How old does my player have to be?
The U7 program welcomes players in JK, SK, and Grade 1.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does my child need to know how to skate?
Skating experience is recommended but not required. While it’s helpful if players have had some time on skates before the season begins, many U7 players are still learning. Coaches focus on basic skating skills and work with each child at their own pace in a supportive environment.
How often are practices and games?
-
Typically two ice sessions per week at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex
-
Practices are usually held on Wednesdays at 5:00pm and Saturday mornings either at 7:30am or 8:30 am
-
The season runs from October to March.
-
Beginning in January, our U7 team joins the Kitchener Girls Local League for some home and away games. They play approx. 5-7 games, a combination of home and away games (usually Kitchener, Guelph, Cambridge, Woolwich). These games are typically held on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and are scheduled in the new year.
-
From time to time, optional tournaments or special events may be available. These are not required, and families who choose to participate will be responsible for any additional costs.
The schedule is designed to be manageable for families new to hockey.
What equipment does my child need?
Players are required to wear full hockey equipment. Click here for details.
Don’t worry — used equipment is very common at this age, and many families pass gear down or purchase second-hand. Stay up to date with our social media for future equipment exchanges.
Will my child play goalie?
At U7, goalie is typically rotated so players can try the position if they wish. Goalie equipment is provided by the organization at this level.
What if my child is nervous or overwhelmed?
That’s completely normal — for both kids and parents!
-
Coaches are trained to work with first-time players
-
Players are encouraged, never forced
-
Older Mustangs players frequently join sessions to help coach, encourage, and inspire our youngest Mustangs.
-
Confidence usually builds quickly once kids feel comfortable on the ice
What does my child move on to after U7?
After U7, players typically advance to U9, where they continue skill development and begin learning more structured gameplay — all at an age-appropriate pace. In U9, both rep and local league streams are available.
How much does the program cost?
Registration fees for the 2026/2027 season will be posted in the registration link below once available. Spaces are limited and offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration will open in June.
