Grand River Mustangs bring home Gold x 2 and a Silver at KGLL Championship Day!
This past weekend three of our Grand River Mustangs Girls Hockey teams participated in the Kitchener Girls Local League (KGLL) Championship Day. The adrenaline may have subsided, but their joy for this season remains. Faces painted with Mustangs black and purple, these players were united in celebrating the day, the season and all the memories made.
Starting out the Championship Day, our U11 team celebrated Gold after an adrenaline-charged win over the Twin Centre Hericanes (3-2). This was most of the players first time attending playoffs or championships, after two truncated seasons due to COVID. Leading the game 3-1 until 41.2 seconds left in the third, these players rebounded strong and fought hard for this win. Even with the regular season over, this team will be competing in the “Worlds Largest and Longest Running Female Hockey Tournament” hosted by the Brampton Canadettes over the Easter weekend along with multiple other Mustangs teams.
After an intense loss to the Kitchener Lady Rangers, our U15 White team finished with Silver (3-0). "This team played with a no-quit attitude in their toughest game of the season," said Assistant Coach Derek Roberts. Playing from last place in their pool to silver medalists, this team left everything on the ice. "They had so much heart and pride with what they accomplished; no goals scored against us in the 3rd period," said Assistant Coach Darren Feser.
Rounding out Championship Day, it was a thrilling game for our U18 Purple team bringing home Gold! The U18 team defeated Waterloo Ravens, who had an undefeated second half of their season (1-0). It's bittersweet for some of these players as they head off to post-secondary in the fall. However, this team left it all on the ice and played their hearts out. What a way to celebrate their Mustangs' journey!
Congratulations Mustangs!
