As we approach the end of January and Play off season, we will soon be approaching Spring Tryouts. The following FAQ is intended provide more information about our Rep Hockey Programs, in order to educate parents about what to expect should their player choose to follow the rep stream.
What to Expect From Rep Hockey:
Ice Allocations: Rep teams are given more ice and it is expected that practices are attended by all players on a consistent basis. On average a Rep team will have 12 home ice times as well as away games, dryland/conditioning training and team bonding experiences.
Coaching Commitment: The coaches within the Rep program make a significant commitment to these teams and will expect the same level of commitment from the parents and players. For those new to Rep, do not hesitate to ask the coach what their plans are early in the tryout process. Similarly, we encourage families to be open and honest with the coach about your own plans and expectations.
Family Commitment: Being on a Rep team is a huge commitment for all involved. Everyone working together can help ensure the experience is a positive opportunity for players to learn, develop skills and have fun. For Tier 1 teams, 95-98% attendance is expected. We strive to include predictability in schedules, however fluctuations will occur.
Cost Commitment: The cost of rep hockey increases due to the increased amount of ice allocated to each team. Families should also expect additional fees to be collected to cover additional development, tournaments, referees for exhibition games, dryland training, etc...
Volunteer Opportunities/Fundraising: To keep fees as low as possible, volunteer roles and some fundraising is required. Regardless of which stream you follow (LL or Rep), each player will be expected to support team activities as well as Association volunteering. In 2024/25, families can expect to pay a volunteer deposit as part of their fees and when individual commitment targets are reached, this deposit will be refunded.
Tier 1 Coaching announcements will begin in the upcoming weeks. Tier 2 Coaches will be announced following Tier 1 Team Selections. Once announcements are made, please feel free to reach out to the coach of your age group to ask more questions. There are many nuances across different age groups and skill levels. The best way to gain more information is to ask the coach who will be leading the team.
In order to ensure that all those involved in the Rep programs have a successful and fun season, we ask that anyone trying out consider the commitment before accepting a spot on a team, when they cannot or do not intend to follow through. As an organization we strive to provide options for families to enjoy the sport of hockey, regardless of whether they consider themselves a Local League or Rep family. Regardless of stream, we are focused on skill development, fun and providing the best team experience for all parents and players.
More information will follow about the Tryout process in the upcoming days.
