Gretzky Gold for Bantam BB!
Taking a break from OWHA playdown action, the Bantam BB Mustangs headed down to Brantford to compete in the 37th Annual Walter Gretzky Tournament.
Dropping the first game of the tournament 1-0 to the host team Brantford Ice Cats was the wake up call the girls needed. The Stangs picked up the tenacity to a new level going undefeated for the remainder of the schedule to meet up with the Ice Cats in the gold medal game.
The Ice Cats were a bigger, more physical team but the new NHL is built on speed & skill, and so are this years Mustangs. Grand River used superior speed at both ends of the rink to force turn overs and move the puck quickly. Seven minutes in, Burnzie stripped the puck on the back check feeding Roon who made no mistakes burying the opening goal and giving the Stangs an early lead. A minute later it was Dix on the back check separating the Ice Cat from the puck which was picked up by Kai to set up the breakaway goal and bump the lead to 2-0.
On the back end, the four first year defensemen (Erika, Jaz, Ferg & Lil) played with poise, patience and physicality. Continuously beating back the Brantford attack and when scoring chances came, Logan was there to hold the fort. The two goal lead would be enough as the Mustangs played one of their best games of the year in all areas of the rink to bring home the gold medal to Grand River.
