Season Opener
With September and exhibition play coming to an end, it was time to start playing games that matter. The home town Mustangs welcomed the Wilmot Wolverines to the Corral on Wednesday night to kick off the 2017 season.
Fast starts are going to be big this year in the ultra competitive Central West Division and that's exactly how the game started. The home town faithful were barely in the luxury boxes when Jaime feathered a sweet pass on to My's stick, which she promptly buried to give the Stangs an early 1-0 lead a minute into the game. The game was a back and forth contest, but the Wolverines knotted up the score at 1-1 before the end of the first frame.
The second period brought huge pressure from Wilmot, but Cobi was equal to the task keeping the score deadlocked at 1 heading into the third.
The Mustangs got back on track and started applying pressure of their own in the final frame. Five minutes in, Jaime made a great read on a D to D pass, picking off the puck and scoring on the breakaway to give Grand River the 2-1 lead. Unfortunately the lead was short lived as Wilmot scored three minutes later to even up the score 2-2. The final four minutes of play would solve nothing and each team went away with a point.
Next up for the Girls of Grand River is Mustangs Day as they host the Brantford Ice Cats.
