Nanninga Shuts The Door In Stangs Win
Playing their 9th game in 13 days, the Midget Mustangs were looking forward to the break but had one last November game on the schedule to take care of. A Thursday night road game at the Sleeman Centre against the Guelph Gryphons.
If the Stangs were feeling the effects of the busy schedule it didn't show early on. Grand River carried the play for the majority of the opening frame, despite the edge in shots the Gryphons tendy was equal to the task and the first period ended at 0-0.
The second period started well for Guelph as they peppered Mustangs goalie Sandra Nanninga with odd man rushes, shots and traffic. Nanninga rose to the challenge turning aside biscuits and players to keep the road team in the game. Her effort was rewarded with a minute left in the middle frame as the "urban legend" Erin Rooney buried a shot from the slot to give Grand River a 1-0 lead that they would carry into the third.
The third started just like the second, with the Gryphons buzzing but Nanninga once again held the fort until Al Montgomery scored off the cycle to give the Mustangs a 2-0 cushion. That goal lead to Chaser's goal three minutes later to push the lead to 3-0 and would ice the game.
Strong effort from all as Sandra picked up her first shutout of the season.
