Two Solid Home Efforts with Mixed Results...
Saturday Dec 20th and Sunday Dec 21st saw a return to home ice for our Atom B Mustangs. Some home cooking, after last weekend's road trips should have been just what the team needed...but things don't always go the way you hope!

On Saturday afternoon, the first place Wilmot Wolverines came to Fergus to play our girls. The game turned out to be a feisty and tightly contested one, from start to finish. The Mustangs met every Wilmot challenge with vigour, and in turn battled hard in the Wolverines zone throughout the match. Backed by another strong performance, by Logan, the girls eventually fought Wilmot to a 0-0 draw.
Sunday, at noon, the Mustangs faced the third place Waterloo Ravens for the first time this season. This game was a fast-paced affair from the outset, with the Mustangs generating some good scoring chances early on. The scoring was finally opened in the second when, after a good cycle effort by Ella and Carolina, Cameron fought out from behind the net and banked the puck in off of a Ravens player. It looked like that goal might stand up, heading into the middle of the third period, when a scramble in the Mustangs zone led to a bang-bang play by Waterloo...and the puck was in the back of the net...1-1. This seemed to energize the Ravens, who soon had the Mustangs on their heels. It wasn't long before Waterloo pressured the girls into a second mishap in their end, and a second Ravens goal. The Mustangs did not wilt, though, and kept up the strong effort that had characterized their play all day. Keeping the puck in the Ravens zone for much of the last few minutes of the game, the girls generated several good chances and made some strong forays to the net after Logan was pulled for the extra attacker.
But in the end it wasn't enough, and the final score was 2-1 for Waterloo.
Despite the loss, though, the girls proved to themselves that really they can take their play to a higher level and compete hard with the teams ahead of them in the standings...And even though it was a weekend of mixed results, it was definitely a step in the right direction as we build towards the playoffs!
