The Mustangs Hold Their Own Against The Tops In The LLFHL
The Mustangs accepted the invite to play three of the top teams in the Novice B LLFHL loops this weekend as they traveled to Brantford and competed in the annual Walter Gretzky tournament. Friday started against the Barrie Sharks who finished first in their respective Lower Lakes grouping and sit on top the their play off bracket. It was end to end action as both teams skated hard and Landyn Meadows scored in the first and third periods with both assits to Kendra Harkins. The defence held off Barrie until the third period but a slight lapse in focus allowed the Sharks to tie the game which ended 2-2.

Saturday morning pitted the Novice B squad against the Ancaster Avalanche, another first place Lower Lakes team and another team standing on top of their play off bracket. The girls competed hard but gave up the first goal to a speedy Ancaster shooter in the first period. Hard work paid off as Erin Pettifer slammed in a rebound again from Kendra Harkins and tied the match in period two. Chances and good play at both ends continued and despite several opportunities the Mustangs were unable to bulge the twine, unfortunately Ancaster delivered on one of their opportunities late in the third making the final 2-1. Sunday was the final round robin match versus the Cambridge Roadrunners, yet a third opponent on the way to the finals in their Lower Lakes bracket. It was a back and forth see-saw battle that saw Cambridge score, then the Stangs answer. Sydney Healey responded in the second from Jillian McIntyre and Madsion Bender, next came a solo effort from Landyn Meadows in the third and finally a sweet shot from Syd Healey late in the final period. The Mustangs ran out of minutes as Cambridge out paced them 4-3 finishing the tournament for both teams. Overall an excellent weekend of strong, competitive hockey against arguably the top Novice B teams in the LLFHL. As the cliche goes "a bounce here or there" and the Mustangs could have easily being playing for their third consecutive gold medal. Great job ladies you confirmed what we always suspected - when you work hard, you can play with ANY TEAM in this province. Play off action resumes tomorrow night in Stratford, lets bring the same compete level against the Aces! See you there!
