Novice B (8406), 2011-2012, Rep (Grand River Mustangs)

The Novice B group concluded the inaugural season of Novice rep hockey in Grand River at the Provincial Championships this weekend. Game one of pool play Friday pitted the Stangs against the champions of the Ottawa region - the Russell Castor River Coyotes. The home side scored first as Kendra Harkins smacked in a rebound from an Erin Pettifer shot, assist going to Syd Healey. The Coyotes answered and then went up by one during the second as the Mustangs seemed to lose their mojo for a 10 min stint. After a very competitive championship weekend in Missassauga the Novice B Mustangs captured the Bronze medal capping off an outstanding LLFHL season. By capturing the West division championship last week the Mustangs earned the right to compete against the three other divisional champs to see who is "the best of the best". Game one pitted the Stangs against the Peterborough Ice Kats. Period one saw the Kats come out flying as their key player netted the opening goal with a tough wrist shot. Get out the brooms folks - it's a sweep! The Novice B group saved their best for when it counted the most as they faced the Wilmot Wolverines in game 2 of the West finals. Despite not beating this very valiant opponent throughout the four regular season meetings the Stangs were able to sweep them away Thursday night in a 1-0 dog fight. 

Tuesday night marked the start of the LLFHL loop finals as the Novice B group traveled to New Hamburg and battled their old foe the Wilmot Wolverines. It was as it should be; the first place team vs the second with a birth to the "Frozen Four" of the LLFHL on the line. The teams did not disappoint and as expected it was a tough, tight, evenly contested match.

It took until the result of the game Monday between Guelph and North Halton, but it is official - the Novice B squad has qualified for the 18 team OWHA Provincial Championships! With the tie Saturday against Guelph (1-1) and Guelph's loss Monday (0-5) the Mustangs finish second in the L17 region and can cross yet another "to do" off their wish list this season and will be playing meaningful hockey in April. It is a nice accomplishment for this young squad and another step in the right direction toward their development as individuals and as a team.
