First Win of the Year!
After a tough season opening loss on Mustang's Day, the atom girls dug down in practice and came out ready to play on Sunday against the Kitchener Bobcats.
And it didn't take long to see the determination in the girls, 19 seconds in Emma scored the first goal of our season to give the good guys a 1-0 lead. Not ready to roll over, the Bobcats bounced back a minute later with a goal of their own and tied the score at 1-1. The remainder of the period was back and forth but no goals to show for the action.
A minute into the second, the Bobcats scored again to take the lead for the first time in the game. Faced with adversity and being behind, the girls turned on the pressure. As Halen kept the puck out in our end, Abby B did her best to put us on top with numerous shots on the Kitchener goal. Her hard work paid off with her first of the year, knotting the score at 2-2 and giving the Mustangs renewed energy. With less than a minute to go, Emma scored her second of the game to give us back the lead at 3-2.
Even though we had a one goal lead, it was a nail biter until halfway through the third when Shan scored to give us a little bit of insurance and a 4-2 lead. Kitchener never gave up, but the girls played tough defensively and held on to the win.
It was a great effort by our whole team. The second years showed the leadership we will need to be successful, as the first years took what we learned in practice and applied it in the game. Regardless of the score, on behalf of the coaching staff we could not be more proud of the effort the girls put forward on Sunday.
